Party Favor Idea for Kids: Birdhouse Crafting Kits

A party favor idea (for kids) that your guests will actually love!

Never thought I would be sharing party favor ideas here, but when you have a kid, you get into those kind of things. So here we are.

I made birdhouse ‘building’ kits as party favors for Hayes’ construction themed birthday party. And while it was VERY loosely tied to the construction theme, they ended up being a huge hit with the kids (and parents).  I even got a few birdhouse photos after the party from parents that said their kids loved painting and ‘building’ at home.

I could picture these being a super cute favor for a woodland themed birthday party and so many more, so I’m sharing all of my sources and the cost breakdown, in case you’re planning a kid’s birthday party in the future.

Party favors can feel so wasteful and boring at times. But I think they can be really fun and exciting for guests when you make them more interactive. Some kind of activity or craft project that kids can continue the fun, from the party, at home. Like these birdhouse party favors…

Materials for Birdhouse Party Favors

• reusable crates – These come in a pack of 5 and the size I bought is 5.9″ x 3.8″ x 2.2″.
• mini wooden birdhouses (similar) – I found all the birdhouses at JoAnn and when I was there, they happen to be doing an extra 50% discount on the balsa wood stuff. So each birdhouse ended up being under $3 (and most were only $1.50). I also found the ‘building’ materials from JoAnn – shorter / mini popsicle sticks for the roof shingles and wooden circles and stars for the windows. Again, 50% off, since it was a part of the wood stuff on sale.
• empty paint pots and paint brushes – The empty paint pots are from Amazon. I have a ton of craft paint already. So this seemed like a good place to save a few dollars and also gave me a chance to customize the paint colors that were used. Paint brushes were also from Amazon. Lots of Amazon stuff. Lol.
• wooden hammer – Bought these to tie in the building theme. Thought kids could use them for some hammering after glueing the roof shingles on or something.
• mini popsicle sticks and wooden circles – These were the roof shingles and windows that I added to small bags for each party favor.
• muslin bags – Theses are the  small bags (3×4) that I stored all the roof shingles and windows in.  They come in a big pack.
• miniature glue bottle – Found them on Amazon and they came in 12 packs.

How to Make Birdhouse Party Favors

There isn’t much to the instructions for this one. It’s just a matter of ordering the supplies (or finding it locally) and assembling them in the reusable crates. To make things easier, I created a post on my Amazon shop that has ALL the supplies for these party favors in one place.

The only other thing that you’d need to do is add paint to the paint pots, if you go with empty ones (like mine). It was really easy and gave me a chance to use up some of my never-ending paint stash. Win-win.

Cost Breakdown

I always like to know how much stuff like this costs, so I wanted to include it.

After all the party favors were put together, the price was under $10 per party favor. But the exact price will vary based on how many party favors you need, since almost everything came in a bulk (packs of 10 or more). I’m honestly not sure if that seems like a lot or a little. But when I started looking at all the normal party favor stuff, before landing on the birdhouse idea, it quickly added up to $8-10+ for just a handful of party trinkets.

You could definitely get the price down to $5 or $6 by leaving out a few things… The reusable crates are the most expensive part at $2.50(ish) each. And removing the wood hammers, popsicle sticks, wooden circles, and glue would take another couple of dollars off the price. You could also skip the paint and paint brushes and use stickers and crayons or makers instead. Lots of options for customizing the birdhouses.

Other Ideas for Birdhouse Party Favors

We had a few birdhouses leftover after the party and have been painting those whenever we have time after school. We did one recently that was Halloween themed, which would be so cute for a Halloween themed party. Or even for Christmas, with some fluffy glitter for snow and some holiday colors in the paint pots.
