Easy DIY Log Centerpiece – Cozy Cottage Winter Decor

One of the most common comments we see on socials is that people don’t know where to start when it comes to thinking of a DIY. We love providing inspiration and how-to’s, one of the main missions of this blog… but we also want our inspirational projects and designs to help you find your own version of cozy and your own DIY’s. All the designers out there from modern to farmhouse, we all base our designs around Mother Nature. So when it comes to finding ways to put your own personal touch on your design and decor why not look to Mother Nature too. Today we are sharing the simplest DIY handle holder out there. Let’s take a look at how it turned out.

This DIY we have done before with an 8 x 8 cut of barn wood. This DIY was done using a 7/8 spade bit and a strong drill. 7/8″ spade bit fit our taper, but take a a look at how thick your candles are to better determine the size of the bit. There needs to be caution taken when drilling into logs and larger harder lumber, if you catch a knot in raw cut trunks and branches, the drill will want to pull out of your hand or kink your wrist… so please be careful and take it slow. In the past we have also used what is called a “step drill bit” to allow for a taper into the the holder. A little trick is if you take a lighter to the bottom of the candle to soften it, you can press it into the any holder to give it a more stable and secure hold while using your candles.

With the spade bit we drilled between 1 1/2″ to 2″ into the wood. We roughly measured about 1″ from each end of the lumber. From there we measured out even spaces which happened to be about 1 1/8″ space between each edge of the candle holder. If you were to buy a stack of birch from a home store or improvement store, they typically come in a little bundle. I liked keeping it in the bungle to raise up the holder a little more, and also give it a little more stability. I did carefully unwound the ties that it came with while drilling the center holes, but replaced the ties to keep it together.

This is clearly as simple as they come. The biggest inspiration from this DIY is how nature can be a great place to turn for your next DIY. This log fits right into this space and we love incorporating nature, especially if we can find it from around the farm and bring it into our home. I hope this helps you find your own version of cozy and your next DIY. Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today and every other day, it truly means the world to us here on the farm. Keep up with us daily on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Thank you so much again, and stay cozy!
