Nana’s Yummy Apple Crumble Recipe

Fall is prime apples season so it seems a shame not to take advantage of it with all of the wonderful varieties out there! I know I boasted earlier that my MIL made the most amazing apple crumble (apple crisp). It’s so true! It has sweet and slightly spicy apples  and a yummy crumble topping. If you’ve never made one, it’s really easy, almost like am upside down pie with a crispy, sweet top. I love making this apple crumble recipe as the temperature dips and the leaves start turning. Not only is it delicious, but it makes  our home smell amazing. You know how I am about loving fall scents!

There are a few variations on the recipe I want to mention. Nana recommends using a tarter apple, but sweeter apples can be used, the amount of sugar needs to be reduced. If you use really sweet apples, you probably don’t need any at all for the filling. Also, adding the Apple pie spice/Cinnamon to the apples she said is strictly an American thing. Growing up in the UK she said they never used it in their apple crumble recipe, but when she came her, she found she really liked it, so she adds it to hers. She also says she cuts her apple pieces larger into more traditional slices, and gives them a few minutes (approx 10) in the microwave to pre-soften them. I prefer to cube mine really small and shove it all right in the oven, but the texture does tend up a little more applesauce like than apple pieces. One last thing, I also prefer brown sugar over white sugar when I make mine. I just like the deeper flavor it brings.
